Cosmo showed off his swing dancing skills during the 2020 BYU vs. Santa Clara basketball game. He ended the dance with the infamous lift from the film "Dirty Dancing." His video has over 32.9 million views on TikTok.
During the 2020 BYU vs. San Francisco men's basketball game, Cosmo gained nationwide attention for dunking from the 3-point line. The dunk reached millions of people through various platforms including ESPN, SportsCenter, and CBS Sports.
During, the 2017 BYU vs. Boise State football game, Cosmo debuted a dance with the Cougarettes that attracted over 1 million views in the first couple days. The video was featured on the Washington Post, USA Today, and CBS.
In January 2018, Cosmo teamed up with Ayo and Teo to recreate a dance from the previous football season. Ayo and Teo are the artists of "Rolex", a song that peaked at #20 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
During the 2017 ESPN College Football awards, Cosmo had a dance off with the Oregon Duck. Most commentators awarded Cosmo with the win. The video gained traction on YouTube totaling over 675,000 views.
For almost a century, BYU's mascot Cosmo the Cougar has become an icon among fans across the country. He has stunned audiences with his dance moves, daring stunts, and friendly spirit. The Cougar was chosen as BYU's mascot by former coach Eugene L. Roberts in the early 1920's. Cosmo made his first appearance in front of BYU fans on October 15, 1953.
In 1997, Cosmo fell 100 feet while hunting for Red-Tailed Hawks in Rock Canyon. He needed "Cosmotic Surgery" and underwent a new look to help the mascot perform more daring stunts.
The name Cosmo derives from BYU's diverse student body. "BYU is a very international, cosmopolitan school, and that is where we got the name Cosmo," said Daniel T. Gallego, the first person to be Cosmo. Today, Cosmo continues to wow audiences nationwide. Cosmo was recently crowned the 2020 Mascot National Champion.
